One of my favorite things to do is write songs. For the past couple of years, I’ve averaged one or two songs a week. Lyrics are my strength. The music? Well, that’s still a work in progress!
One of the best ways I’ve found to improve my songwriting is collaboration. I’ve attended songwriting classes and circles and worked with other musicians on co-writing projects. There’s a lot to learn from other people.
This past Saturday, our band practice took things to another level. We really dug into some of the songs we’ve been working on, experimenting with tempos, chords, and progressions. The goal? Make the songs easier to play, better to listen to, and, most importantly, tell the story more effectively.
I know my music theory has some holes. Working with Tom and Ron has been a tremendous help. Sometimes you have to set your ego aside and do what’s best for the song.
