We're not using any cowbell, so maybe more of that would be good too. But if you've caught one of our recent gigs, or tuned into the latest New Song Sunday, you may have noticed something else creeping back into the mix: more harmonica.
Here's the backstory. I started my musical journey playing harmonica. For years, that was all I played. I didn't sing, I didn't strum a guitar — it was just the harp. I played open mics, sat in on jams, eventually joined a band. In all modesty, I got pretty good at it.
Then one day I picked up a bass guitar. From there came the guitar — acoustic, then electric. And the harmonica got quietly set aside, pulled out only on rare occasion.
But lately we've been working it back into the songs we play, and into the new ones I'm writing. And in doing that, I've remembered what I loved about it in the first place: the free abandon of it, the sheer joy of playing an instrument that doesn't ask you to think too hard — it just asks you to feel it.
So if you hear a little more harp in the mix these days, that's why. I hope you like it, because there's more where that came from.
