What Makes Live Music So Special

It is not Just the music.

Typically, yes — the music is good. But it's rarely as polished as the record. Notes get missed. Verses get jumbled. The timing isn't always perfect. The mix might be off. The acoustics of the room might not be great.

Plenty of bands play a song differently every single time they perform it.

If you want the music to be perfect, listen to the recording.

So, what is it that makes live music special?

It's the energy. That's what makes live music special.

When the band is having fun, the audience feels it and has fun right along with them. The imperfections become part of the experience — sometimes they're the best part. The little changes from the recording. The moment that only happened that night, in that room, with those people.

You can't press play on that. You have to be there.

That's the whole thing. It's the energy.

Since I have become a front man (that is a story for a different blog) I have made it part of my mission to keep the energy up.  To enjoy the performance, even when we make mistakes.  I try to engage the crowd and understand the mood in the room.  To make an interesting show out of it.
