Yesterday we had band practice. We were working on one of my songs that we're adding to the set. As we went through it, my bandmates, Tom and Ron, made some great suggestions — including a very different approach to the bridge. Instead of an E chord, why not start the bridge on a C#m and really shift the emphasis on the words?
We tried it out and kept working the section until I could get the timing down. That was a bit of a challenge for me, but once it clicked, it really started to come together.
This is one of the reasons I appreciate good bandmates so much. They understand music theory far better than I do, and it shows. And understanding that allows for more options.
In my opinion, the song has improved a lot, and I'm thrilled about it.
This isn't the first time someone's input has made a big difference — honestly, I've got a lot of examples like this. It's because I listen, experiment, and try to learn new things.
I've adopted the "Nashville" mantra: whatever's best for the song.
